Neurodiagnostic Lab (EEG, NCS, EMG, Evoked Potentials)
At Vishwalata NeuroConnect, our in-house Neurodiagnostic Lab provides advanced tests that help your neurologist “see” how your brain, nerves and muscles are working. These tests are safe, painless or minimally uncomfortable, and are essential in diagnosing conditions like epilepsy, neuropathy, radiculopathy, myopathy, demyelinating disease, visual or hearing pathway problems and more. Having EEG, NCS, EMG and Evoked Potentials under one roof means faster answers and better-coordinated care for patients from Vashi, Koparkhairane and across Navi Mumbai.
What it is?
EEG records the electrical activity of your brain using small metal discs (electrodes) placed on the scalp. It is completely painless. You will lie down comfortably while the machine records brain waves for 20–40 minutes (sometimes longer, or with sleep / activation).
Common reasons your neurologist may ask for an EEG:
- Suspected epilepsy / seizures, staring spells, jerks, blackouts
- To classify seizure type and guide medication choice
- To look for brain dysfunction in encephalopathy, CNS infections, head injury
- Follow up in patients with established epilepsy
Preparation for EEG:
- Wash hair the night before; no oil, gel or spray on the day of the test.
- Have a light meal beforehand - do not come fasting unless specifically asked.
- Take regular medicines unless your doctor has told you to hold them.
- For some studies, you may be asked to sleep less the previous night (sleep-deprived EEG).
What they are ?
NCS checks how well and how fast electrical signals travel along your nerves. Small electrical impulses are given on the skin over a nerve, and responses are recorded. You feel brief tingling/tapping sensations – uncomfortable but usually well tolerated.
EMG looks at the electrical activity inside muscles using a very fine sterile needle electrode. It helps differentiate nerve vs muscle problems and how severe they are.
Common indications:
- Tingling, burning, numbness or weakness in hands / feet (suspected neuropathy)
- Radiculopathy (pinched nerve from neck or back) – arm/leg pain with tingling/weakness
- Facial palsy, carpal tunnel, entrapment neuropathies
- Motor neuron disease, myopathy, myositis, neuromuscular junction disorders
- Follow-up and response assessment in GBS, CIDP and other neuromuscular conditions
Preparation for NCS/EMG:
- Do not apply creams, oils or lotions on arms/legs on the day of the test.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows access to limbs.
- Inform us if you are on blood thinners, have a pacemaker or bleeding disorder (important for EMG planning).
- Continue usual medications unless your neurologist advises otherwise.
What they are ?
Evoked potentials measure how quickly and strongly the brain responds to specific stimuli (visual, sound, or touch). Electrodes are placed on the scalp; you then look at a screen, hear clicking sounds, or receive mild electrical taps.
Common types and indications:
- 1. VEP (Visual Evoked Potential): checks the visual pathways from eye to brain.
- Indications: suspected optic neuritis (MS/NMOSD), unexplained vision issues, demyelinating disease.
- 2. BAER/BERA (Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response): checks hearing nerve and brainstem pathways.
- Indications: hearing loss, suspected brainstem lesion, demyelination, follow-up in some CNS infections.
- 3. SSEP (Somatosensory Evoked Potential): assesses sensory pathways from limb to spinal cord and brain.
- Indications: myelopathy, spinal cord compression, demyelinating disease, intra-operative monitoring (in some settings).
Preparation for Evoked Potentials:
- Wash hair beforehand; avoid oils/sprays.
- Bring glasses / hearing aids if you use them.
- Take regular medicines unless told otherwise.
- In children, mild sleep deprivation or sedation (under supervision) may sometimes be needed - we will guide you individually.
Clinical Insights
For clinicians and interested patients, our lab follows standardised protocols and normative data for all tests.
All reports are neurologist-interpreted, correlated with your clinical picture, and structured so they are easy to share with other treating doctors if needed.
