Pediatric Neurodiagnostic
Lab (EEG, NCS, EMG,
Evoked Potentials/BERA)
What is Pediatric Neurodiagnostic Lab?
Many childhood neurological problems – seizures, delayed milestones, weakness, autism, hearing or vision concerns – need tests that show how the brain, nerves and senses are working, not just what they look like on MRI. At the Pediatric Neurodiagnostic Lab, Vishwalata NeuroConnect (Vashi & Koparkhairane), we offer child-friendly EEG, NCS, EMG and Evoked Potentials/BERA, interpreted by a pediatric neurologist, so that children get the right diagnosis with minimum discomfort.
Electroencephalography
What it is?
Records the electrical activity of the brain using small electrodes placed on the scalp. Completely painless.
Indications:
- Suspected seizures / epilepsy, staring spells, jerks, fainting-like episodes
- Developmental delay with episodes of unresponsiveness or abnormal movements
- Follow-up in children already diagnosed with epilepsy
Nerve Conduction Study
What it is?
Measures how fast and how well electrical signals travel in nerves. Small surface electrodes give brief electric pulses.
Indications:
- Weakness, floppiness, absent reflexes, suspected neuropathy or GBS
- Foot drop, facial palsy, suspected hereditary neuropathy
Electromyography
What it is?
Uses a very fine needle electrode in muscles to see electrical activity inside the muscle.
Indications:
- Suspected muscular dystrophy, myopathy, myositis
- Clarifying if weakness is due to nerve vs muscle problem
Evoked Potentials & BERA/BAER
What are they ?
Record how the brain responds to visual, sound or touch.
- 1. VEP (Visual Evoked Potential): for optic nerve / visual pathway issues.
- 2. SSEP (Somatosensory EP ): for spinal cord/sensory pathway evaluation.
- 3. BERA/ BAER (Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response ): measures hearing nerve & brainstem function, crucial in infants and children with speech delay, autism suspicion or high-risk newborn history.
What Tests Do We Do?
Role of BERA in Autism & Speech Delay
BERA does not diagnose autism.
Its main role in an “autism vs speech delay” work-up is to objectively assess hearing, even in a very young child who cannot cooperate with standard hearing tests.
Why it matters:
- Some children labelled as “autistic” or “not responding to name” actually have significant hearing loss.
- BERA helps differentiate true hearing impairment vs primary autism, so that hearing aids / cochlear implant can be offered early when needed, and autism therapies are not delayed.
- In children with confirmed autism, BERA may still be advised if there is doubt about hearing, history of NICU stay, recurrent ear infections or inconsistent response to sounds.
How Should We Prepare?
For EEG (pediatric):
- Wash hair the night before; no oil/gel on the day of test.
- Give a light meal - do not bring the child fasting unless told.
- Carry a favorite toy / bottle / pacifier; younger children may be recorded during natural sleep.
- Older children may be asked to sleep late / wake early (sleep-deprived EEG) – we will guide you.
For NCS / EMG:
- Do not apply creams or lotions on arms/legs on test day.
- Dress the child in loose, comfortable clothing (shorts / T-shirt).
- Inform us if the child is on blood thinners, has a bleeding problem or pacemaker (relevant for EMG).
- Prepare the child beforehand that they may feel short, funny “taps” or small pricks – we use distraction and breaks liberally.
For Evoked Potentials / BERA:
- Wash hair, avoid oils.
- Babies: ideally come sleepy and well-fed so they can sleep naturally during the test.
- Carry feeding bottle, extra diapers, blanket.
- Older children should bring glasses or hearing aids if they use them.
